travel with babyWhen you are traveling with a newborn, you need to do some preparation, long before you ever leave home. As a new mother, you might not know how many bottles, diapers, changes of clothing and other baby items you are going to need, especially if this will be your first extended absence from home. The answer to this always seems to be a lot more than you expected!

For this reason, traveling with a newborn takes careful planning and that means always expecting the unexpected. Whether you are in an airport or traveling by automobile, you should be prepared for anything when it comes to traveling with a newborn baby. Sleep patterns might be different, eating patterns might change and you might go through more of everything than you normally do at home. If you don’t have everything handy, it can cause a lot of stress for you and your baby.

When you have limited space, such as when traveling by airplane, it is hard to have all that you will need for your baby. I know from first hand experience that even though I counted everything out that I thought I would need while on vacation, I was so glad that there was a store close by to replenish my quickly diminishing stock. Having what you need, even for short trips can be more difficult for a new mother to discern that has no experience with a baby’s pattern.

Baby and TravellingIf you find yourself traveling with a newborn, the baby’s needs might seem minimal, since you mainly need to be concerned with water, formula, diapers and a few simple clothing changes. Have you ever noticed when it seems like some parents don’t have enough clothing on their newborn baby and others have it bundled in so many blankets that it is a wonder the child doesn’t overheat? Babies don’t retain heat like adults, so they do need several layers of clothing because they can become easily chilled. However, You have to keep the climate in mind, wherever you are traveling to and this includes cold night or early morning air or the hot afternoon sun.

Traveling with a newborn doesn’t have to be difficult if you have the proper supplies and carry all diaper bags or infant carriers. When traveling, some newborn mothers prefer the strap-on “baby pouches” or “baby backpacks” that offer some “hands-free” abilities. This can come in handy when you are carrying your purse, two infant diaper bags and the other extra supplies you will need to keep with you at all times when caring for your newborn baby.

Traveling with a baby can be challenging for many new mothers, but proper preparation can make it less stressful. Make sure you prepare for changes in the baby’s sleeping and eating habits, along with different types and layers of clothing for the different inside and outside temperatures you might encounter. This will make traveling with a newborn a pleasant experience and your baby will be happier and more content.
